The Family Centres are home to several programs for parents and children: Parent support groups, parent education and family literacy programs, guest speakers, and a book lending library.
The Community Action Program for Children (CAP-C)in partnership with School District #8 and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) offers a regular parent and child drop-in for families with children under age six, which features early learning activities, arts and crafts, gym time, snack, storytelling and and parent-child circle time. An eight week group experience for parents and young children, focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs and stories together. The parents gain skills and confidence in supporting their child's early literacy development. Programs are offered in Kaqslo and Meadow Creek. Thre is an 8 week session for parents and babies (0 to 2.5 years) and one for parents with children 2.5 to 5 years.
This six-week support group for parents of young children increases parents' knowledge of children's health, safety and behaviour. The program helps to build ongoing support networks among parents in the community. Childcare and healthy snacks are provided.
The Kaslo Family Centre has an excellent selection of books for parents.
This ongoing program offers support, information, referrals and resources for expecting mothers and parents with babies up to 6 months. Free vitamins and food vouchers are available to parents living on low income. The Kaslo program offers childcare and lunch. The Meadow Crrek program joins in the activities of the SSPACT program. A series of two hour presentations for paretns on topics retlating to child development and family health and well-being. Topics and speakers are chosen in consultations with parents.
