Family Centres

The Family Centres at J. V. Humphries School in Kaslo and Jewett Elementary School in Meadow Creek are home to a wide variety of programs.

Family Centre programs are free of charge and usually closed for the same holidays as school holidays and run from September to June (ends June 17 for 2022).

The Family Centres are home to several programs for parents and children: Parent support groups, parent education and family literacy programs, guest speakers, and a book lending library.

Strong Start Parent and Child Time (SSPACT)

The Community Action Program for Children (CAP-C)in partnership with School District #8 and the Ministry for Child and Family Development offers a regular parent and child drop-in for families with children under age six, which features early learning activities, arts and crafts, gym time, snack, storytelling and and parent-child circle time. Mother Goose Story Kits Program

An 8 week storytelling program for parents of children 0-6.  Parents and children enjoy listening to stories together as the facilitator models storytelling techniques, using props.  Parents create their own “story kits” using a variety of simple craft techniques.  Childcare and snacks provided.  For more information please contact Barb Cyr at 250-353-7691 ext 209 or

Nobody's Perfect

This six-week support group for parents of young children increases parents' knowledge of children's health, safety and behaviour. Parenting Library

The Kaslo Family Centre has an excellent selection of books and DVDs for parents.

Mothercare Pregnancy Support

This program provides support, information, referrals and resources to expecting mothers and mothers with babies up to 6 months. Free vitamins and food vouchers are available to mothers living on low income. Mothercare offers guest speakers, breastfeeding support and group activities.  The Kaslo program offers childcare and lunch. The Meadow Creek program joins in the activities of the SSPACT program. Guest Speaker Series

A series of two hour presentations for parents on topics relating to child development and family health and well-being. Topics and speakers are chosen in consultation with parents.
